Galaxy Macau on track to open this year

18 Feb 2011

Galaxy Macau, the next integrated complex to open on the Cotai Strip (see previous news), is expected to further raise the profile of the iconic strip as an upscale destination.

“Our resort will definitely change the flow of traffic,” said Jane Tsai, Galaxy Macau's vice-president, marketing communications, optimistic that the buzz associated with the Macau peninsula would spread to their area.

While the exact launch date has yet to be determined by the usual feng shui traditions – what is certain the opening will take place within the year – the 550,000sqm resort is preparing to offer an “Asian-centric experience”, based on the partnership of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, Okura Hotels & Resorts of Japan and the homegrown Galaxy Hotel brand.

Said Tsai: “We aim to provide that pan-Asian ambiance and services that will appeal to Asian guests.” She mentioned facilities would include the award-winning Banyan Tree Spa exclusive to Galaxy Macau, Okura Hotels' signature Japanese restaurant, Galaxy Macau’s China Rouge nighclub/bar/restaurant styled like Shanghai in the 1930s as well as 50 F&B outlets, 30 shops and a 4,000sqm wave pool with a 350-tonne white sand beach.

Combined, the three anchor hotels channel 2,200 rooms to the Cotai Strip's increasing inventory – Banyan Tree will have 246 suites and 10 pool villas; Okura will have 500 rooms; and Galaxy Hotel weighs in with 1,500 rooms.

Added Paul Town, Galaxy Macau's vice-president – hotel operations: "Despite its size, the resort has been designed so that guests never feel the crowds. And we will have one of the highest butler-guest ratios in town."

A clear sign that the US$1.9 billion complex is near unveiling, executives of Galaxy Entertainment Group (which backed the development) witnessed this week the last gold leaf being applied to a one of the cupolas adorning the resort's towers. The design feature inspires the company's logo.
