Haneda routes to US and Thailand get go-ahead

8 Jul 2010

Four routes from the US to Tokyo’s upgraded Haneda airport have been finally confirmed, with American, Delta and Hawaiian Airlines being granted slots by the US department of transportation.

American Airlines gets slot to the Japanese capital from New York Kennedy; Delta Airlines gets slots from Detroit and Los Angeles; and Hawaiian Airlines is to operate from Honolulu.

Meanwhile, both Thai Airways International (THAI) and Japan Airlines (JAL) have confirmed that they will operate daily flights between Haneda and Bangkok International Airport at Suvarnhabhumi.

All Nippon Airways, Japan's second largest carrier, had already announced a daily service between the two airports alongside its existing twice-daily flights between Bangkok and Narita, Tokyo’s main airport.

THAI currently operates three flights daily between Bangkok and Narita and twice-daily services between Suvarnabhumi and Kansai International Airport in Osaka.

THAI will use an Airbus A330-300 on the Haneda route, while JAL will use a Boeing 767. Cash-strapped JAL will use the Haneda service to replace its Bangkok-Nagoya route but will continue its twice-daily flights between Suvarnabhumi and Narita, as well as a daily service to Kansai.

On July 16, JAL will restore its daily flights on the Suvarnabhumi-Nagoya and Suvarnabhumi-Kansai routes that were postponed in the aftermath of political violence in Thailand, but it will cut frequency on the Nagoya route to three flights a week and on the Kansai route to four a week.

JAL has also announced that it will convert charter flights from Haneda to Seoul Gimpo airport, Beijing, Shanghai and Hongkong into scheduled passenger flights.
