Indira Gandhi Airport's T3 opens in July A380 ready

14 May 2010

Terminal 3 (T3) of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will open on July 14, ready to host an Airbus A380.

The new facility has nine aerobridges designed to serve the double-deck aircraft.

Since January, trial operations, with help from Munich International Airport, have been conducted to test the operational readiness of immigrations, check-in procedures, baggage, passenger off loadings, flight cancellations, security screening among other systems.

Part of the first phase of IGIA’s masterplan, T3 is expected to be able to welcome 34 million passengers a year and sort out 12,800 bags per hour through a-state-of-the-art baggage handling system. As for the other terminals, T2 is to keep serving international operations until T4 is constructed, and then it will be demolished. T1, meanwhile, is dedicated to low-cost carriers.

More use of glass in the new building as well as its boarding piers is intended to reduce dependency on artificial light.

In recent years, India's gateways – including those in secondary cities such as Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad – have been undergoing major refurbishment, if not expansion due to the country's unprecedented economic boom.
