Lufthansa announces strike contingency plans for Asian customers

The strike initiated by Lufthansa’s pilots’ union, Vereinigung Cockpit, is going ahead as planned. As we reported earlier this week (news), it will take place Monday, February 22 to February 25, 2010. The industrial action cancels two thirds of the carrier’s flights.

Standing by to offer capacities are Lufthansa’s Star Alliance partners as well as Swiss International Airlines and Austrian Airlines. Its regional partners such as Lufthansa CityLine and others will continue to operate normally.

A statement from the airline said it was “currently working very hard on finding travel solutions for all its booked passengers”. However, it added that it would not be able to offer the full usual flight program out of Singapore and its South East Asian Gateways in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok.

It has designed a special flight schedule for the strike period, which can be accessed at www.lufthansa.com, which lists all flights operating according to the emergency plan. Depending on the actual operating conditions during the days of the strike, further changes can be anticipated to the special flight schedule.

Customers, who have purchased a Lufthansa ticket for a flight, operated by a partner airline (codeshare), will not find the LH flight number known to them in the special flight schedule since the partner airlines are not affected by the strike. These flights will operate as planned – flight numbers LH1400-2629 and LH5050-6999.

Customers, who did not provide a contact number or email address in their booking reference to be contacted by Lufthansa, can get in touch with their travel agent or Lufthansa via the airline's website or telephone hotlines. Passengers already booked on a Lufthansa flight during the period from Monday, February 22 to Thursday, February 25, 2010 can rebook once free of charge on another Lufthansa flight if they wish to change their travel plans. Conditions are that their tickets were issued before Thursday, February 18, 2010 and the new travel date is before Monday, May 31, 2010 and their arrival and departure destinations remain the same.

Should a flight be cancelled, and the purpose of the journey no longer applies, passengers can cancel their booking free of charge. Passengers have the opportunity to regularly check the status of their flight at www.lufthansa.com under the heading “My bookings”. A cancellation of the flight and the booking will be shown there. If a rebooking has been made, the travel alternatives will be shown there as well.

Passengers on domestic German flights, whose flights have been cancelled, can independently purchase a rail ticket for the identical route in the same travel class and later, together with proof of the flight ticket purchased from Lufthansa, claim a refund.
