Lufthansa gears up for pilots' strike

18 Feb 2010

Anticipating a pilot’s strike from Monday, February 22 to Thursday, February 25, 2010, Lufthansa has set up a hotline for customers in Hongkong to call and obtain information about re-bookings or cancellations. The number – 852 2868 2313 – is open between 0900 and 1900.

For other customers around the region, they can refer to www.lufthansa.com for more about operations in the coming days as well as other telephone numbers relevant to their markets.

The German pilot’s union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) today gave the nod for the airline’s pilot grouping to mount industrial action. Members belong to Lufthansa, Germanwings (Lufthansa’s low-cost subsidiary) and Lufthansa Cargo.

Passengers already booked on a Lufthansa flight during the expected strike period can rebook once free of charge on another Lufthansa flight should they wish to change their travel plans – provided their ticket was issued before February 18, 2010 and the new travel date is before March 31, 2010. No change must be made in their departure and arrival destination.

Passengers travelling within Germany can switch to rail with Deutsche Bahn if their flights have been cancelled. To do this, they must exchange their electronic ticket (etix) for a travel voucher at a Lufthansa automatic check-in terminal.

Alternatively, they can buy a train ticket for the route for which their flight was valid. Then, this can be submitted with the flight ticket to Lufthansa for a refund.

Lufthansa and the Cockpit union have conducted long and intensive negotiations over employee demands for stronger job security, but have failed to come to an agreement.
