Myanmar suspends visa-on-arrival services

25 Aug 2010

Myanmar will suspend visa-on-arrival services at Yangon International Airport from September 1, 2010, the Department of Immigration and National Registration has announced.

The visa on arrival policy was implemented on May 1 of this year, and will resume in late November 2010.

A department spokesperson said they halted the procedure in order to review the system. Visitors will now have to apply for visas through the Myanmar embassy nearest them.

Myanmar observers, however, speculate that the move may have something to do with the country's first general elections in 20 years on November 7, and be a way of restricting the entry of foreign press during this sensitive period.

In the first seven months of this year, tourism to the country jumped by 37.4 percent, a positive development that has been credited to the easy visa application procedures.
