Ritz-Carlton Hongkong soars above the city

28 Oct 2009

The Ritz-Carlton returns to Hongkong in the fourth quarter of 2010, ensconced in the International Commerce Centre (ICC) in Kowloon – the city’s newest beacon – with 25 percent of its 312 guestroom inventory marked as suites.

“That’s a pretty high figure,” said Mark DeCocinis, the chain’s regional vice-president, Asia-Pacific. “Usually, a hotel will go as far as 15 to 20 percent in this category.”

Occupying levels 102 to 118 – 16 floors of a building whose office tenants count financial heavyweights such as Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse and ABN-AMRO among others, the hotel is expecting its clientele to be naturally tipped towards the corporate sector.

“But of course, leisure travellers will want to come and stay,” DeCocinis added. “There will be a lot of curiosity about ICC and how it looks inside.”

Now billed as the next “highest hotel in the world” (the Grand Hyatt in Shanghai and Golden Dome in Dubai currently lay claim to this title), the future Ritz-Carlton Hongkong will capitalise on providing spectacular city and harbour views from private and public spaces. Centrepiece of its dining options will undoubtedly be the alfresco bar perched 490m above sea level, featuring casual seating, fire pits and a menu of Asia-style tapas and popular cocktails.

Rooms start at 50sqm for a Deluxe Harbour Room reaching to 365sqm for the Ritz-Carlton Suite. The chain's trademark bells and whistles will be present such as Wi-Fi, iPod-docking stations, flat-screen TVs, while Club Room patrons enjoy the Ritz-Carlton Club lounge with round-the-day food presentations, club concierge, work stations, meeting rooms and extensive Wi-Fi capabilities.

For events, a ballroom at 930sqm – complemented by 1,300 sqm of meeting space – will meet the needs of large or intimate events.

At the same time the luxury chain announced details of its Hongkong property, it also revealed The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong, the second for the city, is on track to open in April of next year. This is a month before the 2010 World Expo Shanghai China. And on December 22, Phulay Bay the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve, will also open.
