SIA increases frequencies on popular routes

19 Jul 2011

Singapore Airlines is to raise frequencies on select routes between October 30, 2011 and March 24, 2012, as well as enter a code share with Moscow-based Transaero.

Here are the new timings:

Japan – Returning demand for the destination sees the carrier reinstating a twice daily service between Singapore and Tokyo, up from daily, and Osaka flights increasing to 11 from 10.

Bangkok – Flights will go to five per day, up from four.

Guangzhou – To strengthen its China presence, SIA begins flying twice a day instead of daily.

India – Flights to Mumbai will go from 14 to 17 per week, while those to Ahmedabad grow from two to three per week.

Istanbul – Flights will increase from four times a week to six times a week, of which three flights will carry on to Athens.

Furthermore, under the carrier’s agreement with Transaero, SIA will place its “SQ” code on Transaero operated flights from Moscow to Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Samara and St Petersburg. Meanwhile, Transaero’s “UN” code will appear on SIA’s daily flights between Moscow and Singapore and Moscow and Houston.

While tickets for code-share flights go on sale today, July 18, the partnership will be implemented from August 1 onwards.

The flight expansion is designed to accommodate increasing demand on lucrative routes. According to the Changi Airport group, traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia account for more than two thirds of passenger traffic at the hub, which explains the increased frequencies. Meanwhile, traffic to and from Eastern Europe rose by 16.7 percent in the first half of this year.
