St Regis Lhasa kicks off entry of name hotel brands into Tibet

The St Regis Lhasa opens on November 15, 2010, signalling the arrival of name hotel brands to the destinations dubbed the “roof of the world”.

Earlier, the Shangri-La and InterContinental groups announced they would also be coming in (see news).

The property, located close to major tourist attraction Potala Palace on Jiangsu Road, has 162 rooms and villas. It will also comprise of three restaurants – Social, Si Zi Kang and Yan Ting – a Tea Room, a wine bar with 140 labels of wines, liquors and cigars, the Iridium Spa and a meditation garden. The chain’s trademark 24-hour butler service can be expected.

The St Regis Lhasa, while catering largely to leisure travellers, can also cater to corporate needs with internet access and its ballroom for 100, two meeting rooms and one boardroom.

To contribute to the environmental cause, St Regis Lhasa will be a "green" hotel, utilising solar panels and underground water to produce energy, as well as adopting hybrid vehicles to cut down on overall diesel consumption.

Tibet, which is undergowing a revitalisation of its tourism industry, will launch its first airline, Tibet Airlines, due to begin operations next year (see news).

St Regis Lhasa will be St Regis Hotels & Resorts' second resort property in China, after St Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort makes its debut on November 1.
