THAI Airways is embarking on a major fleet renewal exercise. At the Farnborough Air Show last week, it ordered seven A330-300s from Airbus.
THAI president, Piyasvasti Amranand said they were finalising the programme, which would kick off in 2015. They intend to acquire more wide body types to replace older aircraft with an average fleet age of 11.5 years.
Piyasvasti said to better compete with rivals Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines, they needed an aircraft fleet with an average age of six or seven years old. There are currently 88 planes in THAI's stable, 25 of which it will retire in the next five years.
