VietJet AirAsia to start flights in August

9 Apr 2010

Vietnam has given the go-ahead for a joint venture between regional low-cost carrier AirAsia and VietJet Air, a local private aviation firm, with domestic flights starting in August under the name VietJet AirAsia.

AirAsia has taken a 30 percent stake in the new airline and AirAsia general director Tony Fernandes said the move would strengthen co-operation between Vietnam and Malaysia with their common aim of regional economic development.

VietJet Air general director Nguyen Duc Tam said the Vietnamese would take advantage of AirAsia’s technology and experience to ensure quality and safety.

VietJet Air Asia will become the country’s first privately owned airline and plans to start domestic routes between Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Danang. International routes to Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, and other destinations in Malaysia, China, South Korea and Japan are planned later.
