Hong-Kong based luxury hotel group Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is to open a new Beijing property at the end of the year.

The 278-room China World Summit Wing, Beijing, is scheduled to open in mid to late December in the China World Tower, part of the China World Trade Centre complex in the city’s central business district. At 330 metres and 81 storeys high, the tower is the highest structure in Beijing.

The hotel will have two ballrooms, one at ground level and one on the third floor, the largest of which measures 2,450 sqm and can hold 1,500 people for a sit-down dinner. Reception is on the 64th floor, with the a lift transporting guests up at a speed of 10 metres per second. Rooms start at 60 sqm and are located on floors 64 to 77, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering great views of the city.

Other facilities include the 80th floor Atmosphere bar, the highest in Beijing, as well as a 77th floor spa, a pool and gym on the 78th floor, an outdoor rooftop pine garden on the sixth level, and 12 function rooms. An observation deck, the Peak, is located on level 81.

The hotel will have a range of eating options, including a fine-dining Chinese-Cantonese restaurant, a Japanese eaterie and a New York-style grill house.

Rooms will be kitted out with an iPod dock, free wired and wireless internet access, a Nespresso machine, a walk-in closet, a two-metre long workdesk and a 17-inch invisible TV screen in the bathroom mirror.

There is a shopping mall underneath the building and the hotel is connected to Shangri-La’s other three hotels in the complex – Traders, Kerry Centre and China World. Together the four properties offer about 15,000 sqm of event space.

Matthias Roeke, general manager of China World Summit Wing, said it was a new concept for the city. “China can be rigid in its processes and we’re looking at being very natural and energetic,” he said. “Over the past ten years business travellers have changed their habits – they don’t want stiffness any more.”
